Transitions is a comprehensive educational program that gives teachers the tools they need to teach the life and work skills necessary to obtain and maintain employment, and build a lasting career. These important life and work skills are referred to as employability skills or 'soft skills' and they are usually the determining factor in success or failure in the workplace.
The program can be implemented in a classroom or online and facilitates the teaching of these necessary soft skills to junior high school through university students. There are five modules with twelve lessons per module. Each lesson averages about two hours of instruction. Lessons include pre-quizzes and student self-assessment, anecdotes and quotes, engaging video vignettes, small and whole group exercises, role play activities, situational judgment questions, and student self assessments. Teachers can select activities that best fit their needs.
Online training modules for the CD version and the Web version of Transitions are available here.
The program is aligned to State and National Career Development Standards, SCANS Skills, Bloom's Taxonomy, Multiple Intelligences, and Equipped for the Future Standards.
Research shows that 80% of those fired from their jobs are not let go for a lack of technical job skills, but for problems with professional conduct, the inability to get along with co-workers, dishonesty, or a lack of results-oriented behavior.
A majority of students and adults entering the workforce lack these critical soft skills and therefore struggle to maintain employment and develop a lasting career.
