Reading Plus

Reading Plus software is unique in that it addresses reading fluency, a skill that is almost impossible to teach in a classroom setting. As a reader's eyes move along lines of print, over 15 high speed visual and perceptual processes interact from 3 to 5 times per second. These actions are subliminal; they cannot be directed by a teacher or controlled by a student. If this interaction does not occur effectively, students have frequent fixations and regressions, making it difficult for them to comprehend what they have read. The software improves the basic mechanics of reading fluency enabling students to read comfortably and productively. These are skills that we teach the least, but test the most!

Reading Plus is a scientifically research based software solution that addresses all the elements of reading cited by the National Reading Panel including: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Comprehension and, what is most important, Fluency. The software develops twenty five comprehension skills as well as vocabulary and cloze activities.

The program begins with an assessment which determines each student’s independent reading level, silent reading rate and vocabulary level. Automatic prescriptions are made for the instructional programs and content levels that will be most beneficial for each student’s individual needs.

A second portion of the assessment is provided through the Visagraph which measures the efficiency of the student’s eye movements as he reads. It consists of a pair of goggles fitted with infra-red sensors that record the eye-movements of the reader as they read a short selection of text. Extensive reporting capabilities indicate the level of fluency as well as comprehension levels.
